Hello. I have a file stored locally on my computer that contains the 2008 United States presidential election results in Pennsylvania by precinct, akin to this file over here (results from 2012 by precinct). The problem was I created this .svg in QGIS with shapefiles downloaded from this link (which I believe is public domain by means of government work) and used precinct-level tabulation/data sourced from Dave's Redistricting (DRA). The problem is DRA's site states "© 2025 Social Good Fund for Dave's Redistricting". In addition, the election data itself may be sourced from the University of Florida's VEST, which is under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0. This means that although the .svg itself is my own work (assisted by QGIS) the data used to compile it falls under a copyright gray area such that I would rather not learn what the true copyright status is the hard way (i.e.: upload then get it deleted for copyright). As such, I would like to ask more experienced people on Commons: would that be classified as free media? Thanks. — 3PPYB6TALKCONTRIBS04:57, 24 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

  • What involved in any of this could possibly be copyrightable? You can't copyright facts, only an expression of facts. - Jmabel ! talk 19:26, 24 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Jmabel – I'm afraid that the precinct data that I took off DRA might be an "expression of facts" that is copyrightable (or otherwise non-free/insufficiently free) since it's formatted slightly differently than the official government tabulations. I'm trying to avoid opening a can of worms, but I guess I'm just paranoid, and that this is free media that is permissible for upload... — 3PPYB6TALKCONTRIBS00:17, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
    • @3PPYB6: if I have read correctly above, you are proposing to upload a map based on the data, not a data page corresponding to the CSV, right? I don't see any way a map of election data could infringe the copyright of a site that published the data in tabular format. After all, they did not create the data, just formatted it. - Jmabel ! talk 03:45, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
      @Jmabel – Yes, that is what I'm doing (just the SVG). So I guess I'm in the clear. — 3PPYB6TALKCONTRIBS12:07, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Image file improvement

[edit]

I recently created EN::Boating Party. At commons, we have two files for this work. File:Lyon 1er - Musée des Beaux-Arts - Salle 229 - Partie de bateau (Gustave Caillebotte).jpg is a 13.1 megapixel 5.79 MB version and File:G. Caillebotte - La Partie de Bâteau.jpg is a .72 megapixel .124 MB version. Both are used throughout various wikipedia articles. The higher resolution version does seem more vibrant, but it has a brown strip across the top. Is there a way to clean up the image or get a better version?-TonyTheTiger (talk) 16:33, 24 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure if the brown stripe can be cleaned up in situ but, in the meantime, I've created a version which crops it off. Andrew (talk) 17:10, 24 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Help getting photo to show up in infobox

[edit]

Category:Adiane Trade (talk) 18:45, 24 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

What will it take to get the photo from image of cosplay (P13632) to correctly appear in the infobox of the category?--Trade (talk) 18:46, 24 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

I think that the image has to be used with "Property P18" on Wikidata to get displayed. But that's only a guess. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 18:54, 24 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
That's the issue. P18 is only meant to be used when no other suitable property exists. It was never supposed to be a dumping ground for any and all images related to the subject Trade (talk) 19:02, 24 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Trade: There are four example images at d:Property:P13632 and three files under Category:Cosplay of Adiane by country, which one do you want?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 18:57, 24 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Trade: There is nothing saying you cannot have two properties with the same value. Add it as P18 as well. - Jmabel ! talk 19:32, 24 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
P13632 was proposed with the explicit purpose of not having two properties with the same value. Doing so would go against the consensus on Wikidata Trade (talk) 19:36, 24 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
It works when I add the image as P18. If you don't want that, we can remove it, but I don't see another way. -- Auntof6 (talk) 00:22, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I mean so far we haven't really done anything to change the infobox template. Just making (arguably bad) changes to the Wikidata item in question Trade (talk) 15:43, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

File renaming

[edit]

I can not rename a file. I can type a reason and a new name but don't have a button to press (can see left part of the text only but not the button). Please rename File:Кубок Пик Коммунизма.jpg It's another mountain, Victory Peak, not Communism. Tamdam (talk) 13:17, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Tamdam: Please suggest a filename. Would "File:Кубок Пик Победы.jpg" be suitable? -- Asclepias (talk) 13:34, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Much better in English. Victory Peak Cup (1956) for example. Thank you. Tamdam (talk) 14:00, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the suggestion. However, hmmm, I would prefer to respect the language of the uploader. Correcting the factual mistake about the identification of the mountain is a valid reason for renaming. But changing the language without the consent of the uploader is not a valid reason for renaming. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:19, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
As you wish. As for me it adds difficulty to other users. Tamdam (talk) 14:29, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Done: Special:Diff/1060966174/1061354044. I don't have qualms in changing the language (at least when it's not in latin script) towards (mostly) English when a valid renaming reason exists. That does indeed better the usability, as latin script is accessible to more people than Cyrillic or Kana, for instance. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 19:25, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

how do you directly create a redirect

[edit]

I need to make some redirects for some files I uploaded with multiple names but I can figure out how to do that without creating a new file first which will mess up the redirect. can anyone explain how I can create a redirects without uploading a new file? I know how to make a redirect but the issue is that if I try to create one that is a new file page it forces me to upload an image PharaohCrab (talk) 19:27, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@PharaohCrab: Then you're doing it wrong; please see Help:File redirect.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 20:17, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I know I'm doing it right, my guess now of why it doesn't work is that I edit from the mobile version of the website PharaohCrab (talk) 20:44, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
"Mobile version"... That's a solvable issue. Don't use some app, use a browser to access Commons on your device. On Android, you have Firefox, Chrome and Opera available, and Safari on iOS. Everyone supports switching to a desktop mode (surmised for Safari, I'm an Android guy). Then, just remove the "m" in in the address https://commons.m.wikimedia.org ( or click on the link "Desktop", found in every page's footer). This way, you'll get the standard desktop view will all editing tools available; you may then create your redirect. An maybe easy way is to edit some random page, insert the link to the redirect to be created, previewing it and opening the redlink in another tab. Then, write the needed code, save and you're done. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 08:04, 26 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I actually edit from a computer but the normal version of commons is blocked on my device however the mobile version isn't so I have to edit from it PharaohCrab (talk) 23:32, 26 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
As long as you're using the trick of inserting a redlink that is to be used as redirect onto any page (it's maybe advisable to do that in your own userspace if something goes unexpectedly wrong), using the preview to see and access the edit mode of the redlink, you should be able to make your wanted redirect. Don't forget to work in source editing mode. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 05:37, 27 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I've tried that already PharaohCrab (talk) 17:41, 27 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Then, try something contra-intuitive? Use an actual mobile device, tablet of smartphone, and switch to the desktop mode on that one, if your computer doesn't allow standard Commons? And how does this come, are you using a corporate network device? Or do you perhaps have an amok-running "security" software? Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 17:48, 27 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I think I found a method, if I do what you said on Wikipedia instead then it works because standard Wikipedia isn't blocked PharaohCrab (talk) 17:53, 27 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
ok it only kind of works it lets me do it on Wikipedia but doesn't let me export it to commons PharaohCrab (talk) 18:04, 27 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@PharaohCrab: so for some reason you can't do this. Make up a list of what you want redirected where, and if someone thinks it is reasonable and they are willing to take responsibility for it, they can do it on your behalf. - Jmabel ! talk 19:02, 27 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
good idea, do you have an idea of who could do it I already have a list PharaohCrab (talk) 20:29, 27 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@PharaohCrab: It's impossible to volunteer without seeing the list. I have no idea whether I would agree or disagree with the proposed redirects. Again, the person who does this is responsible for the edits, and you seem not to be able to come up with a way to do it yourself, so the only way it can possibly happen is a more specific request. - Jmabel ! talk 22:11, 27 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
here is the list of redirects I would like created
These file names should redirect to a file with same name but with the last "l" being replaced with a g, I would also like this file name to redirect here PharaohCrab (talk) 00:09, 28 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
thanks! PharaohCrab (talk) 02:54, 28 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Oh, I wasn’t aware of this thread. OP had created local redirects on the English Wikipedia, which came up as broken redirects because the local targets did not exist. I figured out what they intended, so I created the file redirects here on Commons. plicit 04:15, 28 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

add inheritance of categories

[edit]

I think it would be useful in the media viewer to either: have the "Category:Something" pages display all media of sub-categories

or

have each individual file automatically inherit super-categories for whatever categories it is added to

for instance, in "Media in category "Singapore in the 19th century"", there are 27 images, but there are also 18 subcategories, in total having another 100 images or so, which are not displayed in the media viewer for that category. These probably should all be displayed in the media viewer as well, without having to go into the sub-category pages.

The alternative would be that whenever a user adds a category, it is automatically added to any higher level category as well, and then it would display all of them as well if someone were viewing the higher level category. Wrfrancis (talk) 15:51, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Communist symbols

[edit]

File:COA of Sevastopol.svg and related files make the astonishing claim that the coat of arms of a Ukrainian city is prohibited by law in Ukraine. Is there any basis for this claim? Is there a way to remove it without deleting the communist symbol tag entirely? 98.97.15.215 20:58, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

The template was added by a user who now seems inactive. Look how the forbidden symbols are defined exactly in the article of the code and if the gold star meets the definition or not. If it does, leave the template. If it does not, remove the template from the description page. The gold star, although it is from the Soviet era, may or may not be a symbol of communism or a forbidden symbol. You have to look what the law says. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:25, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I don’t speak Georgian, Indonesian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Korean, or Ukrainian, so I can’t interpret the laws cited in the template. I would assume the Ukrainian city council didn’t adopt a symbol that’s illegal in its own country, but it could be restricted in other countries. 98.97.15.215 22:53, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Laws of many countries have translations in English. When not, machine translation can give good enough results for a section of law. You can also request help from Ukrainian-and-English-speaking users on Wikipedia. I would not assume anything. It may depend on many factors, for example when the section of the code came into force and if it was enforced. After 2014, that code would have no effect in practice on Sebastopol. Even before then, it would not necessarily be impossible that Sebastopol kept the CoA despite the law. However, I agree with you that it seems more likely that this particular symbol is simply not forbidden. But again I would not assume anything. We would need someone who is familiar with the topic. You have probably a better chance by asking at the Reference desk of Wikipedia or on a Ukraine-related project page. -- Asclepias (talk) 02:05, 26 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
If you look at the English translation available from the United Nations, at section 436-1, relating to forbidden symbols, you see that it does not say "communist symbols" but "symbols of communist [...] regimes". It's not clear if that would be interpreted to include symbols of municipalities, but it's quite possible. You can also see that this section about forbidden symbols was indeed added to the law in 2014, so, whether this section forbids or not this coat of arms, in actual practice this section of the law has been unenforceable in Sebastopol. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:31, 26 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Ah, I was under the impression that the Ukrainian law was in place before 2014. While the criminal code is translated into English, the law that defines symbols of the communist totalitarian regime and the exemptions for their use isn’t. A machine translation suggests that current coats of arms are excluded from this category, and medals awarded to persons (I assume the city counts as a legal person) before 1991 are exempted.
Applying machine translation to the rest of the list, Georgia’s law seems to require the removal of communist symbols only upon request by a government commission. Indonesia’s prohibits the teaching of Marxism-Leninism but doesn’t seem to have anything to do with symbols of the Soviet Union (unless those symbols promote Marxism-Leninism, I guess). Latvia’s and Lithuania’s have specific lists of symbols that don’t appear to cover the Hero of the Soviet Union medal. Lithuania’s also exempts official symbols of an existing state. South Korea’s law is about “anti-state organizations”, not historic symbols of the Soviet Union.
So I’ll just remove the template. 98.97.5.71 22:49, 26 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Someone else can remove the template from File:Sevastopol Flag.png, File:Sevastopol-flag.gif, and File:Flag of Sevastopol.svg. Apparently those edits have been detected as potentially harmful. 🙄 98.97.5.71 22:58, 26 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Devesh dasani:
  1. Although what you do on Wikipedia is not Commons' affair, I strongly recommend you read en:WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY before you find yourself blocked on the English-language Wikipedia. You have disclosures that you must make there, and it looks like you have not done so.
  2. Because of the nature of these files, you need to come through the VRT process. At COM:VRT is an email address; you need to communicate with the to let them know that you are, indeed the creator of those files. I'd recommend sending such correspondence from a domain associated with your business as a film director/producer, if there is such a domain. There may need to be some back-and-forth emails, but it should be possible to work it out.
  3. Also follow the instructions on COM:VRT about marking the files as "permission pending."

Clarification on Reuploading Images After VRTS Permission Email

[edit]

Hi, @Hedwig in Washington

I uploaded several of my own photographs to Wikimedia Commons, but they were removed yesterday. I have since sent a permission email to the Wikimedia VRTS team (including a release statement and image attachments). [Ticket#: 2025072610000865] Since the images are already deleted, do I need to reupload them myself once the permission is approved, or will someone from the team restore them?

Also, when is it appropriate to reupload if needed — should I wait for confirmation, or can I reupload now and add a note about the pending VRTS email? Thank you for your guidance, Abooyeah Abooyeah (talk) 04:01, 26 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Yes, you can upload the files. It would be nice to keep the filenames the way you sent them to VRT. Just add this: {{subst:PP}} to your upload underneath the information template. I just checked, backlog isn't too bad. Three days is rather quick. Happy editing! --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 04:31, 26 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Abooyeah: better than what Hedwig suggested (because we should not end up with an extra copy of each image, and all deletions are "soft" deletions): does this apply to all of your photos that were recently deleted? If so, I will undelete them for you, and you can mark them with {{subst:PP}} If not all, can you list here the ones of which you sent permissions to VRT? - Jmabel ! talk 07:24, 26 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

I’ve just re-uploaded the images using the same filenames I originally sent to VRT. I also added {{Permission pending|year=2025|month=July|day=26}} to the information section as instructed.

New Contributor Seeking Guidance on Uploading and Attribution

[edit]

Hi everyone,

I'm new to Wikimedia Commons and would really appreciate some guidance. I have uploaded my own fitness-related photos and properly credit myself as the author, but I’m unsure how to do this without it coming across as self-promotion or violating any guidelines. Could someone kindly point me in the right direction on how to provide author information correctly while staying within Commons policies? Thanks in advance, and apologies if I’ve made any rookie mistakes so far! — Abooyeah (talk) 11:47, 26 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Abooyeah: Commons has no rule against uploading content that you are connected to, as long as it is in scope. If you want the attribution to credit you by your real name, that's fine; have a look at almost any of my own first-party uploads to see a way to do that.

Im quite sure it is covered. There are some images on the website that are copyrighted, so I like to make sure by looking at the metadata. It was listed that government works are in the public domain on the Commons page for Monaco's copyright law, and apparently is stated somewhere in Law 491 (loi n.491), so I am going based off that. Rexophile (talk) 18:08, 26 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Rexophile: sounds like we need a new template, which you can model on other similar templates. - Jmabel ! talk 20:30, 26 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Rexophile:
In File:AlbertIIdeMonaco.jpg, both source websites linked, the government website and the palais princier website, have copyright notices and state clearly that the contents are not free.
You seem to refer to article of the Loi sur la protection des œuvres littéraires et artistiques:
"Article 38
Les lois, ordonnances, arrêtés, décisions et publications administratives, judiciaires ou officielles ne bénéficient pas de la protection instituée par la présente loi."
On the page Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Monaco, it is translated as: "Laws, ordinances, orders, decisions and administrative, judicial or official publications do not benefit from copyright protection.".
The laws of several countries have similar provisions by which texts of official nature, such as laws, etc., are excluded from copyright. That does not necessarily mean that "works by the monégasque government" are public domain. Two things can be noted in that article 38. Firstly, it is not specifically about works from Monaco. By that article, laws of alls countries are not under copyright in Monaco. Secondly, it is limited to some types of works. That's the difficult part. The words with potentially the broadest meaning are "official publications". What does that include? Is a portrait of the prince of Monaco and portraits of heads of State of other countries official publications under the scope of that article of the law and thus freely usable in Monaco? We must be cautious. Unless something clearly says so, it is more prudent to assume that it is not so.
Anyway, to be on Wikimedia Commons, a file must be free in the United States. That is not a problem for documents such as laws, because the copyright law of the United States also says that such documents from all countries are in the public domain in the United States: PD-US-GovEdict. But that does not apply to portraits. File:AlbertIIdeMonaco.jpg is not free in the United States and therefore it cannot be on Commons.

I think it's best that we establish contact and make an inquiry with the relevant government party to determine this, before we delete any files. Then we can go from there. Rexophile (talk) 23:20, 26 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
The photo is not under a free license. It must be deleted. If you believe that you can contact the copyright holder and obtain that they offer the photo under a free license, you can do it. IMO, the chances are very low for this photo. If evidence of a free license is provided, the file can be undeleted. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:14, 27 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
If you want, you can also contact authorized officials of the government of Monaco to ask what is their interpration of what is or is not included in the expression "official publications" in the copyright law. For example, if they consider that the expression can include a photo published by the government. The answer could be useful in a general sense, at least for works that can also be free in the United States. However, as mentioned above, whatever the answer to that question may be, it is not sufficient for having on Wikimedia Commons the photo of Albert II discussed here or other such photos. To be on Commons, such photos must be free in the United States, so they need a free license from their copyright holder. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:05, 27 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Bakhos2010: I can think of no reason a statue erected relatively recently in Kazakhstan would be in the public domain, and there is no commercial freedom of panorama in Kazakhstan, so I can't see any way we could host that on Commons without a license from the sculptor or the sculptor's heirs. - Jmabel ! talk 19:06, 27 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

IP got blocked due to proxies

Read w:Proxy server and w:Open proxy for what that is, but simplified, a proxy is basically another computer that does the tasks on your computer's behalf. For example, if you use a proxy to upload a file to Commons, your computer sends the file to another computer before sending to the Wikimedia Commons computers/servers, rather than directly to the Wikimedia Commons computers/servers.
Unfortunately, this can be abused since if we want to stop bad people ruining this site, we would have to not just block their computers, but block their proxies too, and there are LOTS of them. See w:Wikipedia:Open proxies for more (it's actually about Wikipedia, but some of it also applies to Commons).
However, you didn't know you were using proxies, so were you using a VPN by any chance? Or your computer has an antivirus software that came bundled with "privacy protection features" like VPNs and other stuff? HyperAnd (talk) 10:14, 28 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Dear Wikimedia Support Team,

I hope this message finds you well.

I recently created a gallery page on Wikimedia Commons titled "Dr. Narendranadh Meda", intending to highlight his professional contributions as a vascular and endovascular surgeon in India. However, the page has been flagged for speedy deletion under criterion CSD GA2, indicating that the content appears to be encyclopedic in nature.

I now understand that such content should be published on Wikipedia instead of Wikimedia Commons, and I would like to resolve the issue appropriately. Could you please guide me on the best way to:

  1. Transfer or recreate this content on Wikipedia (if applicable),
  2. Retain any images I uploaded for use in a future Wikipedia article, and
  3. Ensure compliance with Wikimedia’s content and formatting guidelines.

Your support and guidance in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know the next steps I should take to rectify this situation.

What has changed in ordering images with names starting with numbers in a category. I recently visited two sites where most of the images are numbered based on the USAF unit they represented. Information request contact details considered abuse? I set up details about my family but forgot to add contact details for historians to get in touch. When editing, I was refused as considered as abuse? Does anyone understand why?

@James Liskutin: Hi, As mentioned on your talk page, you need to prove via COM:VRT that you are the copyright holder of Miroslav Antonin Liskutin's works, or the files will be deleted. Please do not post contact information on Wikimedia Commons, for your own security. Thanks, Yann (talk) 17:55, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Besides needing to do the VRT thing (yes, that is really required in this case), on the contact front: as long as you monitor the email account you've associated with your Commons account, anyone can reach you that way. If you haven't done so already, you also might also want to make sure in your user preferences that you get emails informing you when someone edits your user talk page. And it is acceptable on your user page to indicate a website where you can more readily be reached, if there is one, but generally posting of emails, phone numbers, etc. on this site is considered a bad idea. - Jmabel ! talk 18:10, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Edit Metadata Section

[edit]

The imported metadata placed in the Metadata section is wrong for the File:Antique Pasta Press P001 crop.jpg. When it uploaded, it added in Short title: "I. DeFrancisci&Son Screw Press Model 1914" instead of I. DeFrancisci & Son Screw Press Model 1914". It looks like it did not like the ampersand. Is there a way to fix that? Thanks. Semper Fi! FieldMarine (talk) 14:35, 31 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

@FieldMarine: I cannot find the problem you are referring to. Is this something you have already fixed yourself? If not, can you be more precise about the location of the problematic text? - Jmabel ! talk 17:12, 31 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
The uploader wants to edit the metadata. In the line "Short title". By replacing the code for the ampersand (ampersand amp semicolon) with " & " (space ampersand space). -- Asclepias (talk) 17:51, 31 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Meaning the EXIF metadata? (Everything but the picture is metadata, I thought they were referring either to wikitext or SDC).
As far as I know, the only way to change EXIF content is to download, edit, and re-upload. You can either use EXIFtool or (on Windows) the editing that is built into the Windows "properties" capability (in the "details" section of "properties"). - Jmabel ! talk 18:08, 31 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Interesting. A Mediawiki API query confirms that the incorrect text is in the metadata that Commons extracted automatically from the media, it's not just rendered wrong in the default interface for the page. The weird part isn't even that the ampersand is converted to a HTML escape, but that the space around it are eaten. The file itself has “I. DeFrancisci & Son Screw Press Model 1914” in its IPTC and XMP metadata, so this doesn't appear to be an error in the file. Since this appears to be something Mediawiki has done, you may have to bug report it. – b_jonas 11:28, 2 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Uploding futsal club logos

@Zoran Stojanovic: Whether the club still exists or not has no bearing on whether the logos retain copyright. There is some chance that the copyright remains with the person who designed the logo; there is some chance the copyright belongs to whoever is the successor to their assets; assets might even have been individually sold. So if the logos are complex enough to be copyrighted and if (almost inevitably) they are not old enough to have aged out of copyright, they are copyrighted and you'd have a hard time even determining who would hold the copyright and could possibly issue a license. Very tough to work through obtaining any sort of license for something like that, probably not worth trying in my opinion.
If you can give URLs for some of the simpler logos in question, someone might be able to tell you whether they are so simple as to be ineligible for copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 04:29, 1 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Aethonatic: What categories are you writing about?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 22:13, 2 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Jeff G.: I initially thought about this so I could efficiently move images in both Category:Alexander Dennis Enviro200 MMC integral buses in the United Kingdom and Category:Trentbarton (bus company) to Category:Alexander Dennis Enviro200 MMC integral buses of Trentbarton. I've already moved the images, but I'm still inquiring about this in case there's a way that allows for there to be one edit done to each image that sorts out the categories. @Aethonatic: Those categories have: 7 C, 455 F; 2 C, 223 F; and 95 F (respectively). You want everything in Category:Alexander Dennis Enviro200 MMC integral buses of Trentbarton? Like I've said, I've already moved the images myself. I should've asked this question before doing so in hindsight, but I think getting an answer now would be sufficient in the event I need to do something like this again in the future.
To be clear, I'm not talking about moving all of the images in each category, only the ones that cover both subjects/share both categories. Aethonatic (talk) 22:45, 2 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Aethonatic: you first access one parent category and use Cat-a-Lot to move the chosen images from that category to the new category. Then you navigate to the new category and use Cat-a-lot to remove the other parent category from all images. - Jmabel ! talk 00:22, 3 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

The license of the article does not cover material that is not in the article. Phys.org is not under a free license and is not the rights holder of the image. It credits M. Sener and A. Singharoy for the image. If you really want to use this particular image, you can contact one of them and ask if it is published under a free license and where they published it. The image might be under a free license in the original publication. If so, try to copy the image directly from the free publication, not from a non-free intermediary. If the image was never published under a free license, and if the authors agree to issue a free license now at your request, ask them to send the permission directly to Wikimedia, following the procedure described at Commons:VRT. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:12, 3 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
More broadly, you might want to read Commons:Uploading works by a third party if you are doing this sort of thing. - Jmabel ! talk 16:58, 3 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Would this map fall under US Government work?

[edit]

https://maps.lib.utexas.edu/maps/imw/txu-oclc-6654394-nf-17-2nd-ed.jpg, made in 1961 by the US Army, but I’m unsure with copyright regarding US Gov’t works. If not is there any alternatives featuring these former road numbers of Cuba. Thanks ! CubanoBoi (talk) 01:50, 3 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Yes, this is work by the Army Corps of Engineers {{PD-USGov-Military-Army-USACE}}. Abzeronow (talk) 01:55, 3 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

File identification issue for File:Smith Observatory and Dr. William R. Brooks House.jpg

[edit]

After reviewing the information on the Wikipedia page which uses File:Smith Observatory and Dr. William R. Brooks House.jpg, I've come to believe that the houses depicted are not the observatory and house. However, I based this identification on coordinates on the Wikipedia and Wikidata entries, and I believe those also need to be reviewed. Not sure what to do. (If it does turn out this isn't the place, I also want the file deleted. It serves no purpose if it does not depict the place.) Packer1028 (talk) 03:00, 3 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Packer1028: It does not look like it [2] [3]. -- Asclepias (talk) 03:37, 3 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
I’ll nominate it for deletion, but what should be done about the coordinates? That’s my big concern. Packer1028 (talk) 03:45, 3 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Packer1028: You can use Google maps Terrain view and possibly Street view to see if they are plausible. - Jmabel ! talk 05:09, 3 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
If they are inaccurate, you can correct them. The house is at the corner of Castle street and Highland avenue. On Google maps in decimals the observatory seems approximately at 42.87263N 77.00252W. -- Asclepias (talk) 05:19, 3 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Right. Apparently you can't delete your account. You can only ask to "vanish". Cheekpa (talk) 03:35, 3 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Organizing category by year

[edit]

Hi, so Category:Norodom Sihanouk is pretty unorganized. How do I make a "by year" set of categories like in other categories of photos of people? TansoShoshen (talk) 07:25, 3 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

@TansoShoshen: I would say there are not enough images there to merit by-year categories. If you want, though, you could add sort keys (e.g., for a given file, turn [[Category:Norodom Sihanouk]] into [[Category:Norodom Sihanouk|1960]]). That would put the existing files in chronological order. Of course, you'd want to check now and then for new files, because it's not a self-maintaining scheme. - Jmabel ! talk 17:01, 3 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hey everyone

Can someone create Template:NoFoP-Ecuador. 獅眠洞 (talk) 21:44, 3 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Could someone please explain me a use case where this kind of template makes sense in our policy and guideline framework? I just looked at a single random example in the French NoFoP category, and it was already a probable copyvio, sent to DR. Those NoFoP categories could be only be tools to sort such infringements, I fear, and is that worth the work? Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 00:34, 4 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
I think u may look for COM:FOP of Country.Where It is explained and below(end of section) u can see discussion for Futher details. 獅眠洞 (talk) 00:38, 4 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
It depends country wise example: China and India have FOP while Indonesia, UK-Australia(art in public space) doesn't.

Permission to copy and use a file photo

[edit]

Lt. John Bulkely photo file # g14252.jpg. I am writing the Centennial book of Del Monte Philippines. The book will feature the 1942 escape of Gen. MacArthur from Corregidor island to Australia via the Del Monte plantation in Mindanao. Lt. Bulkely was the skipper of PT41, which ferried MacArthur, his family and staff from Corregidor to Mindanao. May I have Wikimedia's permission use the above-cited photo of Lt. Bulkely? The book of course will give ample credit to Wikimedia. Please advise as well if there are fees to be paid. -- MANNY NISPEROS My contact: NisperosER@delmonte-phil.com MannyNisperos (talk) 08:58, 4 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Convience link File:Lieutenant John D. Bulkeley g14252.jpg. Wouter (talk) 09:32, 4 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
@MannyNisperos: You do not need a permission from Wikimedia. Anyway Wikimedia cannot give a permission because it does not hold a copyright. There are no fees. You do not need to "give credit to" Wikimedia. If you use this particular copy, you may, if you wish, mention Wikimedia merely as a source, but that is not an obligation. However, as mentioned relatively to your other question below, you may prefer to use a copy from another source. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:38, 4 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Photo of Lt. John D. Bulkely - file # g14252.jpg

[edit]

The file details say "this is in the public domain in the United States." Does the latter mean I can't use the above-captioned photo in a book that will be published (in English) in the Philippines, and distributed for free to company employees and retirees of Del Monte Philippines? -- MANNY NISPEROS <NisperosER@delmonte-phil.com> MannyNisperos (talk) 09:44, 4 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

@MannyNisperos:
The banner that states "it is in the public domain in the United States" indicates only the status of the photo in the United States. It does not apply to other countries. The Copyright Act of the United States makes the works of the U.S. government free from copyright in the United States only.
"The prohibition on copyright protection for United States Government works is not intended to have any effect on protection of these works abroad. Works of the governments of most other countries are copyrighted. There are no valid policy reasons for denying such protection to United States Government works in foreign countries, or for precluding the Government from making licenses for the use of its works abroad." [4]
"Outside the U.S., the protection of U.S. government works is dependent upon the laws of that country. This is due to national treatment in the international copyright treaties, which means that you apply the law where the work is being used. Thus, if a U.S. government document is being photocopied in Canada or Italy, you apply the copyright laws of Canada or Italy. This means that in some situations, an unprotected work in the U.S. will be protected in another country. It also means that a U.S. government department may be approached for copyright clearance in a work that may be freely available in the U.S. but may be protected by copyright in another country." [5]
A book distributed in the Philippines must comply with the law of the Philippines.
The status of a photo in the Philippines is determined by the law of the Philippines. That law states that photos are under copyright in the Philippines for 50 years after the publication.
The source for this copy of the photo states that the photo was made circa 1942. The year of publication is not indicated. There are probably good chances that it was published before 1975 and in the public domain in the Philippines.
Note that you can obtain a copy of this photo in much higher resolution from other sources, for example www.history.navy.mil.
For more recent U.S. government works that may be under copyright in countries outside of the United States, permission for use can be requested from the relevant United States governmental organization that controls the work. Sometimes, such organizations offer their works, for example on the website flickr, under a free license, which applies worldwide and facilitates and guarantees the safe use of those works in other countries outside of the United States without the need to request additional permission. When a work is already in the public domain under the law of the other countries where the work is used, a permission or a license is not needed.
